More walls get resized by venue constraints than by budget. Confirm these before dimensions are final, because each one can force a redesign.
Rigging capacity and method
A 500mm x 500mm cabinet weighs roughly 20 to 30 pounds depending on pitch and series. A 16 x 9 configuration is 144 cabinets — call it 3,500 to 4,300 pounds of panel before you add header truss, motors, and cabling. That load has to go somewhere.
- Rigged from structure requires certified points with documented capacity, a rigging plot, and in New York City venues, typically an approved rigging plan and union labor.
- Ground-supported on a tower-and-header system needs floor load capacity plus a depth footprint behind the wall — often 4 to 8 feet — that eats into stage depth. Many hotel ballrooms have no usable rigging points, making ground support the only option.
Power
Budget roughly 25 to 40 watts per square foot average draw, with peak draw on full-white content running two to three times higher. A 26-foot by 15-foot wall lands around 390 square feet — plan for distro in the 60 to 100 amp range at 208V three-phase, and confirm the house has it available where you need it. In older venues, the answer is often no, and a generator or a cable run from a distant panel becomes a line item.
Load-in window and access
Cabinet dimensions matter at the freight elevator, not just on the wall. Confirm dock access, elevator interior dimensions, door widths, and whether the venue permits overnight load-in. A 144-cabinet wall is a 6 to 10 hour build with a proper crew, plus processing, mapping, and content QC.
Regional patterns worth knowing
Manhattan hotel ballrooms — Gotham Hall, Cipriani, the Ziegfeld — reward careful height math and usually mean ground support. Javits Center and Duggal Greenhouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard offer real ceiling height and rigging capacity, so the constraint shifts to budget and content scale. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in Connecticut have purpose-built event space with strong infrastructure and their own in-house requirements. The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and the Rhode Island Convention Center both run on tight union load-in windows that reward a rigging plan submitted early.
